While 497 foreigners were expelled from Nepal in a year, 1,506 Nepalese were expelled from abroad. According to the data published by the Immigration Department, the number of Nepalese deported abroad in 2024 is three times more than those expelled by Nepal. Most of those deported from Nepal are involved in overstaying offences. According to the department, 451 foreigners involved in overstaying and 46 involved in other crimes were returned after paying fines.

Chinese, American, Bangladeshi and Pakistani citizens were the most illegal residents in Nepal. In 2024, citizens of 64 countries have been expelled. There are 147 Chinese, Americans and Bangladeshis 54 each, Pakistanis 35 and British 27, 14 from Ghana, 12 from Australia, 11 from Sri Lanka, eight from France, seven from Canada, six from Russia, five each from Germany, Uzbekistan and Cameroon and four from South Korea have been expelled. Most of the American and British nationals who are to be expelled are citizens of Nepalese origin. Due to lack of knowledge about immigration laws, they are subjected to such actions. Police officials said that because Nepal gives on-arrival visas to citizens of all countries except 12, foreigners involved in illegal activities frequently come to Nepal.

According to the immigration regulations, an individual with a tourist visa can stay in Nepal for a maximum of five months in a year. American citizens can stay for 6 months. However, those who stay beyond that period are fined by immigration for the offense of overstaying and expelled from Nepal for a certain period. Nepalese have been expelled from Middle Eastern countries like Malaysia, America, Korea and Japan. The American government has been bringing the illegal residents to Nepal on a special plane.
