Hotels and restaurant exceeds 140,000 in Nepal

The number of institutions offering residential and hospitality services, including hotels, lodges, resorts, homestays, guest houses, restaurants, and catering/party venues, has reached 142,233 in Nepal. According to the National Hotel and Restaurant Survey report for the year 2080 BS, issued by the National Statistics Office on Tuesday, the highest number of such facilities are located in Bagmati Province, with 52,123 establishments, while Karnali Province has the fewest, with 7,110. Other provinces report the following numbers: Koshi Province – 25,887; Madhesh Province – 11,740; Gandaki Province – 16,976; Lumbini Province – 20,158; and Sudurpaschim Province – 8,228.     

According to the survey, described as the first integrated national hotels and restaurants report, 387,474 people are engaged in the hotel and restaurant sector while the industry has provided direct employment to 106,459 individuals.

The hotel and restaurant sector’s fixed assets (investment) in 142,000 establishments are valued at Rs. 543 billion and 250 million. Of this, 28 percent of loans and investments are in the financial sector. The survey shows that this sector has added value worth about Rs.109 billion 271 million to the Nepalese econom. These establishments have earned Rs. 326 billion 10 million income by spending a total of Rs. to 261 billion 615 million as salary and wages.

Forty four percent of investors are women and the remaining 56 percent are men, according to the survey. There are around 160,000 employees working regularly on salary and wages bases in this sector. It has been seen that these institutions are providing over Rs. 2000 billion annually to the employees in terms of salary, wages and benefits. The hotel and restaurant industry has 1.96 percent contribution to the Gross National Product (GDP) of the country.
