This year Nepal has earned Rs. 12.72 billion from India through export of electricity to the southern neighbour. The income was earned by selling electricity in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2081-2082 B.S. (mid-July to mid October, 2024), according to Nepal Electricity Authority sources.
According to the data one billion 667 million and 892 thousand units of surplus electricity was exported to India during the period. The average price of the exported electricity was Rs 7.63 per unit.
The NEA exports surplus power to Haryana and Bihar states of India through the Day Ahead and Real Time Market of Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) at a competitive rate under the bilateral mid-term electricity sale agreement.
Nepal has so far received permission to export 941 MW of electricity produced from 28 power projects to India.
Nepal has also started supplying power to Bangladesh through the use of India’s transmission lines. During previous fiscal year Nepal had exported electricity worth Rs. 17.06 billion to India. During the same fiscal year, Nepal imported electricity worth Rs. 16.93 billion to the southern neighbour making a net gain of NRs. 130 million.
However, this year, upto now Nepal has not imported any power from India. As the winter season approaches the electricity export to India will gradually diminish in the coming days due to diminishing water level in the rivers, according to NEA officials. Nepal will require to import electricity from India in the coming few months of winter as most of the power projects of Nepal are run-off the river based.
