The President briefly meets UN Secretary General
President Ram Chandra Paudel has reached Baku, Azerbaijan, leading Nepal’s delegation to the 29th UN Conference of Parties (COP29) on Climate Change.
The event is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, from November 11 to 22, 2024.
President Paudel’s visit is in response to an invitation from Azerbaijani President IlhamAliyev. He is scheduled to address the World Leaders’ Summit on Climate Action on November 12.
Additionally, Nepal will hold a high-level session led by President Paudel on November 13 during COP29. Nepal will further highlight its agenda in a high-level meeting on “Addressing Climate-Related Loss and Damage in Mountainous Regions.”
President Paudel is scheduled to return to Nepal on November 15 on completion of the event.
Meanwhile Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri along with Forest Secretary Dr. Deepak Kumar Kharal and other senior officials and experts have reached the conference venue.
President Ram Chandra Paudel has briefly met United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
They met on the aircraft from Doha, Qatar to Baku, Azerbaijan to participate in the 29th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-29). During the meeting, there was a brief discussion between them about the problems caused by climate change, according to sources close to the president.
“Climate change is a common problem for all of us. We all have to come together to solve this problem to protect the mountains, the Earth and the human community,” the President’s press advisor Kiran Pokharel, quoted the President as saying during the conversation.
