Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakash Singh has called for climate justice while discussing the impact of climate change in Nepal.
Addressing a session on “Cities and the Climate Crisis” in Cairo, Egypt Wednesday, he said Nepal is at high risk of climate change. Developing countries like Nepal, despite having very low carbon emissions, have seen the direct impact of climate change so much so that they strongly raised the issue of climate justice to the world community only through easy access to international climate finance and technical assistance.
“On the one hand, urbanization is increasing at a rapid pace in Nepal, and on the other hand, millions of people are affected every year due to the effects of climate change, including excessive rainfall, drought, unseasonal rain, floods, landslides, avalanches, and glacier bursts,” Deputy Prime Minister Singh said. He also said that the Government of Nepal has made climate friendly by reviewing the urban policy and development strategy. Government of Nepal has made arrangements to provide grants in the cost sharing of the federal, provincial and local levels for the reconstruction and restoration of private housing for families who have lost their homes due to disasters caused by climate change.”
DPM Singh also appreciated the support extended by national, international, non-governmental and partner organizations in the aftermath of the disaster.
