Due to incessant rain, around 1,300 megawatts of electricity generated by various projects across the country has been halted. According to the Nepal Electricity Authority, the electricity production from hydropower projects in Likhu, Solu, Koshi, Kabeli, Tamor corridor has stopped.
The 456MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project, the largest ever commissioned, has been shut down since 7pm on Friday. Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower control room building of the project dam was completely damaged by the landslide.
Due to the transmission line, power generation of Likhu 1, Likhu 2, Likhu A, Lower Likhu, Khimti and Upper Khimti hydropower projects has stopped. Due to the floods, electricity production from hydropower projects including Mandu Hydropower, Upper Tamakoshi, Madhye Solu, Beni Solu, Solu Dudhkoshi, Upper Dudhkunda and Madhye Tamor has also halted. Apart from the damage to the power house, other hydropower projects will be put into operation as soon as the rainfall subsides, said the NEA. Kulman Ghising, executive director of the Authority, said that due to incessant rains, not only the supply of electricity in the domestic market halted, but also the electricity being exported to India has been halted.
