‘Govt. to review decision not to allow construction within 40 metre from the river bank’

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has hinted that the government will soon opt for a review on the Supreme Court’s decision that no structure can be built up to 40 meters from the river bank of Kathmandu.

After understanding the memorandum letter of a team including coordinator Suman Sayami of the Valley Road Expansion Victim Struggle Committee and River Standard Concern Group PM Oli said that the government is ready to address the issues of local people and concerned groups.

“We accept the decision of the court. However, some verdicts may be flawed because of varied reasons. The legal way to correct the verdict if it does not look appropriate is to correct it,” said Oli.

“I believe that the court will consider people’s grievances and you will get justice. The Nepali culture is a symbol of unity and friendship. Varied elements are trying to break the national unity and identity. We need to be alert as those that lack substance may try to destroy the essence of unity,” remarked PM Oli in a meeting that was organized at the official residence of PM at, on Monday.

In the meantime, The Kathmandu Valley Mayors Forum has demanded review on the court verdict. The statement issued by the forum mentions that in order to protect the property owned by the common people living in the valley, they strongly demanded the government to implement the decision of the honourable Supreme Court dated: 2080 Paush 3 to set the river bank standard at 20 meters. In its decision at the 10th meeting the Kathmandu Valley Mayor’s Forum strongly urged the Nepal government to review the decision. The statement was signed by Chiribabu Maharjan, chairperson of the forum and mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC).
