Members of parliament appear looking forward eagerly to contributing to meaningful discussion on the budget for the next fiscal year. Since the new budget will determine the way Nepali economy will go in the fiscal 2023-24, MPs consider it their duty to play their role effectively.

Although the budget will be presented on behalf of the government, there are various ways MPs – ruling or opposition – could contribute to it. Since the present level of investment and employment is very poor in Nepali economy, all would be emphasizing more investment and opening of jobs in various sectors.

According to one MP, efforts will be made to discourage government to spend in unproductive areas. “The productivity should be considered as priority point for determining spending. The recession being felt presently could also be addressed properly if spending is done with a sense of productivity. “

The agricultural sector, another MP said, would also be stressed this time in a special manner. Since the sector plays an important role in the country’s economy, it should be given top priority and farmers’ interest should be kept at the central point.

Various MPs with expertise in myriad fields have also prepared to contribute to budget-discussion in a serious professional manner. “This time the parliamentary discussion on the new budget will be different; it will not only focus on demand for list of specific projects for specific constituencies.” said a media analyst.

A senior politician said the finance minister will get real direction for the budget through the specialists’ discussion on the same. “There will be fresh drive for social cultural change in the society as well.”
