The Nepali national women’s football team has been eliminated from the Asian qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics to be held in France. Nepal was eliminated from the first round after losing 2-0 to Vietnam in the match held at Dasharath Stadium on Saturday. In the first match of Group C, Nepal lost to Vietnam 5-1. Vietnam entered the second round by winning overall with a wide margin of 7-1 over Nepal. Vietnam took the top spot with the most 6 points from two games. Host Nepal remained scoreless. Afghanistan and Palestine withdrew their names from this group at the last moment. After that, two matches were played between Nepal and Vietnam. Nepal played against Vietnam for the first time.
Vietnam, ranked 33rd in the FIFA rankings, kept pressure on Nepal from the beginning in the second match as well. Vietnam scored two goals within the first seven minutes before the Nepali women’s players could take control on the field. Vietnam’s Pham Hai Yen scored two goals against Nepal. In Thi May’s corner, Yen scored easily when the Nepali defender and goalkeeper could not clear the ball. A minute later, Yen added a second goal. Yen managed to score a great goal, beating three Nepalese defenders and the goalkeeper on Thi Thuy’s cross. She scored one goal in the first game. She has scored three goals in total against Nepal. Nepal’s coach Anantaraj Thapa replaced goalkeeper Angela Tumbappo Subba with second choice Anjana Ranamagar in the second half.
