Chinese Communist Party leader Liu meets President, PM

Foreign Department Chief of the Communist Party of China Liu Jianchao paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Sunday.

During the meeting held at the official residence of Prime Minister, Baluwatar, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest, according to the Secretariat of the Prime Minister.

The Chinese leader also met Foreign Minister Dr. Narayan Khadka on the same day.The meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singhadurbar. The duo discussed further strengthening bilateral ties between Nepal and China, read a statement issued by the Ministry. In the evening, Minister Khadka hosted a dinner in honour of the visiting Chinese delegation. Liu, the head of the International Liaison Department of the Chinese Communist Party arrived at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on Sunday morning for a four-day visit, leading an eight-member delegation.

The Chinese official also called on President Bidya Devi Bhandari and met CPN UML Chairman K P Sharma Oli, Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal among the leaders.

This is Liu’s first foreign visit since he took over the role in the first week of June. This is another high-level visit from the neighbouring country after the visit of the Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in March.

Before arriving in Nepal, Liu Jianchao had held a virtual meeting with the top leadership of the ruling Nepali Congress and the Maoist Centre and the main opposition party CPN-UML.
