Asta Laxmi Shakya Shakya was appointed as Chief Minister of Bagmati on Wednesday as the first woman chief minister of Nepal. Bagmati Province Chief Bishnu Prasai administered the oath of office and secrecy to Shakya at the office of the Province Chief later in the evening.
The Province Chief appointed Asta Laxmi Shakya as chief minister on the basis of majority supports to her as per Article 168 (1) of the Constitution. The article states that the provincial chief shall appoint the leader of the parliamentary party commanding a majority in the province assembly as the chief minister, and the provincial council of ministers shall be constituted under his or her chairpersonship. Earlier, outgoing chief minister Dormani Poudel on Wednesday resigned from the post of the parliamentary party leader of the UML and as chief minister both.
