President Bidya Devi Bhandari has prorogued the ongoing sessions of both the House of Representatives (HoR) and National Assembly (NA) at the recommendation of the government headed by Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.
The meeting of the Council of Ministers had decided to recommend President Bhandari to end the session on Monday at midnight, according to cabinet sources.
Addressing the House of Representatives on Monday, speaker Agni Sapkota read out a statement from the President in which she called for the end of the monsoon session. The first meeting of the reinstated House of Representatives started on July 18. However, CPN-UML Lawmaker Mahesh Basnet has accused the government of ending the session to bring an ordinance and divide his party. “I heard that Nepali Congress wants to end the monsoon session and bring an ordinance. If this is true then it will be a dark day in the history of Nepal’s parliament.”
