Following the resignation of his predecessor Shankar Pokhrel on Sunday, Governor Amik Sherchan had called parties to claim the chief minister’s position with an assurance of the support of majority lawmakers. Then, KC had submitted signatures of 42 lawmakers from the 80-member assembly.
KC worked as the internal affairs and law minister under the Pokhrel-government for over three years before the CPN-UML and the Maoist Centre split again and the Maoist Centre withdrew the support extended to the provincial government. Following that, the Maoist Centre and the Nepali Congress had joined hand to oust Pokhrel. As per a deal made with the Nepali Congress, KC will rule the province for the next eight months, after which the Congress will take over until the next provincial assembly polls . KC is expected to form a small cabinet inducting leaders from the Maoist Centre, Nepali Congress, and the Samajbadi Party Nepal on Monday.
